Communication Officer Vacancy - HelpAge International


HelpAge International is an INGO, working in Nepal for over 10 years with its partner organizations.  HelpAge International helps older people claim their rights, challenge discrimination and overcome poverty, so that they can lead dignified, secure, active and healthy lives. Its work in over 50 countries is strengthened through our global network of like-minded organisations – the only one of its kind in the world.
Rapid global ageing is a key issue for the developing world. One in five people will be over 60 by 2050.

Recently registered, it is now looking for a Communications Officer for Nepal office.  For the chosen candidate the ability to interact effectively with international, and national personnel is required.  A demonstrated ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and process information in support of changing program activities is necessary.  A high professional standard of communication as well as the willingness and ability to enforce compliance with HelpAge and donor policies and procedures is essential.  The Communications Officer must be willing to travel extensively to HelpAge field offices and project sites.

Educational Qualification:
  • Preferably Masters degree in communications/ Media or related field
  • Or equivalent working experience
Job Specifications:
  • Solid experience in a media or communications role.
  • Experience of managing projects in a communications environment.
  • Extensive expertise in interviewing and story writing for mixed media
  • Developed research skills, with an eye for detail
  • Flexible approach
  • Excellent relationship building skills
  • Sensitivity and a record of delivering engaging and compelling content.
  • Experience of gathering, editing and making information accessible for fundraisers.
  • Experience of planning and coordinating logistics for donors and affiliates field case study gathering visits.
  • In depth experience of designing and producing multi-media communications materials and working with photographic and video resources, including making video.
  • Representational skills including that gained at local, national and international level.
  • Experience of working with Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo.

Job Description:
Responsible To: Country Representative
Responsible For: TBA
Relations with Others:

Internally with line manager in Nepal: Country Representative, Project Officer, South Asia Desk officer London, Communications and Brand Manager London, Communications Officer (Donors and affiliates) London.

Externally with partner organisations, donors and Government departments.
Main tasks: 
  • Act as the focal point for communications and fund raising related communications.
  • Respond to information requests and briefs from London office; and provide support such as project summaries, photo suggestions, case studies. Identify and manage production of new video, photographic and case study materials for public fundraising and communications purposes.
  • Work with Communications Team (London) and Programmes colleagues to ensure that the future case study and photographic needs of fundraising affiliates are fed in to planning for new content during field visits.
  • Build capacity of HelpAge International and HAI-Nepal, Affiliate and partner programme staff to collect communications material for different audiences, including public, through training, mentoring and establishes systems.
  • Provide reports, as agreed, for committed givers and donors to HelpAge’s fundraising sisters (incl Age UK) funding products, and provide feedback and training and mentoring to partners to improve quality.
  • Provide advice to programme staff on communications work and resources available to produce programmes resources. E.g. brand, templates, publication and marketing forms, flickr library.
  • Maintain a list of external suppliers, who can work with programmes staff to produce, publications materials, events etc. Manage these suppliers for agreed projects.
  • Ensure all materials produced reflect brand position and all organisational brand, communication and advocacy guidelines are adhered.
  • Arrange for the translation of key documents from English to local language or visa-versa.
  • During humanitarian emergencies, take lead and ensure production of high quality and timely communications resources for fundraising globally.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Keep abreast of key communications and advocacy initiatives across the network and respond to the information needs arising.
  • Manage logistics of visits - including for HelpAge fundraising communications and fundraising sisters (incl Age UK) staff and partners to produce materials - and ensure the collection of quality photographic, video, case studies and background material. The job holder may be required to accompanying visits where necessary. 
  • Manage translation of material into English and organise materials for use by other HelpAge affiliates.
  • Update intranet, provide up-to date materials for HelpAge website and update social media (Facebook, twitter, Flickr and others) in co-ordination with the HelpAge London communications team.  
  • The jobholder may be required to undertake additional tasks, commensurate with status, after consultation and the provision of necessary support and training as appropriate.
Be part of emergency roster joining HelpAge Emergency Response Team as communications member on occasions.

The jobholder is expected to operate within all HelpAge policies and procedures.
